Without this option the new windows live messenger (2011) can't connect to the
internet. We have a very restrictive internet policy at our university, which
might be the main cause for this, but enabling proxy, but without the
"Automatically detect settings" it is not possible to connect.

It's a very useful feature both for users and system admins and shall b
implemented in PS. Also this need no any additional coding xcept setting one
more value (or pair of) in a registry -- the rest will b done by OS itself :)

Same here. When switching from direct connection (no proxy) to manual config,
the Automatically Detect Settings box is cleared. When switching back to direct
connection, Auto Detect Settings is not re-enabled. This really should be part
of the proxy setup, especially if the extension is taking the step of clearing
the box anyway.
