Thanks for a great project! I would really like to se this Modbus bootloader work for Uno / Mega on a UART.

Is this possible ?

It is possible in several ways:

Just using bootloader from here, that is softuart, stand-alone & interrupt independent, portable to any attiny family.
For more advanced feature like real uart or usiuart implementation is needed but then you loose the portability.
