Unlikely to be widely used, but the correct implementation would:
use LaTeX href environment to link inline citations, or at least toggle linked, cito, and tooltip to FALSE always.
call style="LaTeX" by default in bibliography() when knitr hooks were set to Sweave/Latex output.
These changes at least should be relatively simple. A more ideal method would write everything to a bibfile and then call it so as to benefit from bst style formatting.
