Hey Kevin - I actually had some changes committed for use_ssl that I didn't push up to the repo. splunk-client-0.10.0 has a use_ssl option which is currently live on RubyGems.
splunk-client-1.0.0 is pushed to this repo and incorporates your refactoring into an options hash. Take a look.
