That "AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS..." line added to bottom of Makefile.am fixed my ./autogen.sh issue.
However when I run ./configure it gives text below, including something about missing OpenSSL. I'm in Mint 17 and software manager says OpenSSL is already installed, so it's not finding it.
Do I need to to extract source into a particular directory before doing the autogen and configure commands?

When compiling on Ubuntu 14.04, with latest automake, autoconf and autogen. ./autogen.sh gives the following error:

This is easily fixed by adding "AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = subdir-objects" to Makefile.am
