This is interesting... I would be able to test with PIA to confirm this, but unfortunately I do not have home internet for a few weeks.
I do recall it working fine for me in the past though.
I've done some testing with the Windows NordVPN client and so far, I haven't able to replicate your issue at all - even with "(App) Kill Switch", "Split Tunneling", or "Invisibility on LAN" turned on.
Try adding -Djava.net.preferIPv4Stack=true
to your Java arguments. I don't know what your network setup looks like, but based on the stacktrace, it could be IPv6 related. Do you have a firewall or antivirus application that might be interfering with your network?
Just to clarify, I am able to launch and join game when the VPN is off. So I think it is the cause.
The Java arg works, I am able to launch and join game with that.

Simple to reproduce. Launch MC with a VPN enabled. I am using NordVPN, cannot confirm if it affects other VPNs.
