I used VirtualMachine VM to make a Ubuntu virtual machine on MacOS High Sierra.
I had to get a key from a ubuntu keyserver to be able to install the current version of R, rather than the updated version in the main Ubuntu repository.
To be able to install devtools, I had to install outside of R libcurl4-openssl-dev and libssl-dev.
Then I installed combayes without any trouble and the examples from the Readme.md file work.
