I think I fixed that yesterday. What does winetricks --version say?
If it doesn't say 20110417, you need to update your winetricks.

~$ winetricks --version
20110402
I'm trying again.

Should always read the wiki first...
A suggestion: Put a link to the wiki-page "installing" into the head of
winetricks.
Makes it easier to find.

Allright, I have 20110417 now.
$ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 sh winetricks -q ie6
gives me
fixme:shell:MLLoadLibraryA ("inetres.dll",0x5ec00000,0) semi-stub!
fixme:storage:create_storagefile Storage share mode not implemented.
fixme:iphlpapi:NotifyAddrChange (Handle 0x8ede90c, overlapped 0x8ede8f0): stub
wine: configuration in '/home/user/.wine_ie6' has been updated.
Executing w_do_call ie6
ie6 already installed, skipping
cat: /tmp/w.user.4468/breadcrumbs: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden
(=> file or directory not found)

Forgot: I updated before to Wine 1.3.17.

You're up and running. The breadcrumbs error is spurious, shouldn't affect
anything.
The original error message was also slightly spurious, it was just a bug in
the did-it-install? check.
Try installing again with a clean wineprefix, it should look nicer now.

~$ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 sh winetricks -q ie6
returns

cat: /tmp/w.user.6689/breadcrumbs: Datei oder Verzeichnis nicht gefunden

Allright, spurious.
But
~$ WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 wine ~/.wine_ie6/drive_c/Program\
Files/Internet\ Explorer/IEXPLORE.EXE
gives
wine: cannot find '/home/user/.wine_ie6/drive_c/Program Files/Internet
Explorer/IEXPLORE.EXE'
In fact it's missing.
:(

"ie6 already installed, skipping"
makes it sound like you didn't do
rm -rf ~/.wine_ie6
before installing (I had suggested you install into a clean wineprefix).
If that doesn't solve it, email me log.txt from
rm -rf ~/.wine_ie6
WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine_ie6 sh winetricks -v -q ie6 > log.txt 2>&1
