I've taken a first pass here at converting the README into markdown. I've included a few in-line comments for sections that I'm unsure of how you would like them handled (using the link format [//]: # (comment goes here)), at lines 6 & 351.

Original referenced issue, #17, has been closed and it seems like GH renders the README fine now. Not sure what this means for related PR #64.
