Unlike Fel Reaver that (correctly) can be seen a thousand yards away, Durn the Hungerer appears to have exactly the same visibility range as other mobs. In this video you can see it's far greater than those of other mobs (as mobs pop up many mobs as the player approaches Durn). It's quite probable there are other large mobs (such as Durn's sons or mobs seen during some of the flying events, like Abyssal Shelf quest mobs) that have a similar issue.
In addition, while the issue appears to have been settled, it'd provide a nice data point to verify the general view distance many people have been complaining about. I might try to compare the video to current Corecraft behaviour, or someone else can if they get to it first.
