http://www.wowhead.com/spell=32379/shadow-word-death#comments there's only one mention about durability loss, it's referring to SW :D not doing durability loss when the caster dies from the spell.
Would be nice to have some more evidence. Especially in the die against NPC case.
Doesn't the killing blow the only thing that matters(i'm curious)? found sources: http://web.archive.org/web/20080325031018/http://www.wowwiki.com/Shadow_Word:_Death http://wow.gamepedia.com/Shadow_Word:_Death http://vanilla-wow.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Word:_Death

@lastnoob thanks. Guess since we have a bunch of possibly independent mentions of it, it probably was true you could use it to potentially avoid gear damage in a PvE scenario.
As a priest, if you kill yourself with the Shadow Word: Death backslash damage, it causes you to suffer 10% durability loss. I will edit this post if I find a wowwiki article about it, but it should be quite obvious it shouldn't cause durability loss, because it should be considered as a pvp kill. The internet is full of it, but I can only find comments and posts, can't find any official statement.
