You can't remove it because you're currently casting a spell. Jumping or moving does not cancel auto shot (but turning around does); which means the spell cast is still active, making you unable to unequip it until you cancel it.
I don't know if it's retail-like behavior or not (maybe an auto-repeating spell like auto shot shouldn't count as a cast that makes you unable to change weapons), but I don't think it matters very much.
If you want to research it, you can of course do so, but if you find it is indeed a bug it'll likely become a low priority one.
check a hunter pov Nefarian video, since they have to remove their bows during class calls.
On the vanilla video, switching weapon didn't cancel auto shot, but it didn't cancel the shoot animation either. 12:00 on the video above, the hunt switchs weapon in the middle of the animation, without reseting it. at 2.4.3: switching could either have cancel the auto shoot, or just reset the animation without canceling the auto cast.
I'm quite sure that the timer (and animation) is reset in the video by swapping
If he switches when he is in position, just waiting for the arrow to go while he is aiming, there is an animation, but it's more like a bug animaiton (you see the character move like he has taken damage, not reloading the weapon). The other scenario i saw ( at 12:00 on video) is when the character is doing the loading animation (i mean picking and arrow from the quiver and placing it on bow), switching at that time didn't cancel the animation, or make it look "bugged", nothing.
while auto shooting is active (not while "casting" it) you cannot remove or replace your weapons (both ranged & melee weapons)
however this only happens if you're facing your target
reproduce: activate auto shooting, keep facing your target, move or jump so you can't shoot and try to remove or replace one of your weapons
