Would this also have to be implemented in the regular CDK? I would love that too, but I thought the idea was for both to be interoperable.

I'm not so sure about this, we might need the team to confirm this but I really hope they will come out a Rust AWS CDK 😁

Support for new languages is done through https://github.com/aws/jsii which means both the AWS CDK and cdk8s will be supported.
