Context from DFO on their rationale for Dark mode: Improved Readability for Some Users

White backgrounds with black text can create excessive contrast and cause eye discomfort, especially in dimly lit environments. Dark mode can help soften the contrast and add an extra level of user control for users with visual sensitivities or those who might prefer lower contrast levels in certain situations.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Some users with specific vision impairments, such as light sensitivity or photophobia, struggle with bright interfaces. Dark mode provides an alternative that may make the interface more accessible to these users, fostering inclusivity.

Supporting the Consistency & Standards heuristic

Many modern digital products now offer dark mode as a standard feature, and its absence can make a product feel outdated. Offering dark mode helps meet user expectations for modern UX standards, keeping in line with other digital products they may use day-to-day.

Circadian Rhythm Support

Exposure to bright blue light from screens at night can interfere with sleep by disrupting the body's circadian rhythm. Dark mode, combined with reduced blue light, may help minimize the impact on users’ sleep patterns, especially if used at night.
