Error when loading overlay. #21

Closed rvega closed 9 years ago

rvega commented 9 years ago

When loading the cape-universaln overlay, I get the following error message:

$ echo cape-universaln > /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.*/slots
echo: write error: file exists

Also with config-pin:

$ config-pin overlay cape-universaln
Loading cape-universaln overlay
zsh:echo:1: write error: file exists
Error loading device tree overlay file: cape-universaln

Here are my loaded overlays:

$ cat /sys/devices/bone_capemgr.*/slots

2: 56:PF---
3: 57:PF---

5: ff:P-O-L Bone-Black-HDMI,00A0,Texas Instrument,BB-BONELT-HDMI

And my kernel version:

$ uname -a

How can I troubleshoot this?

rvega commented 9 years ago

Disabling HDMI lets me load the overlay. Isn't the universaln cape supposed to be compatible with hdmi?

Occasionally there will be something useful in dmesg:

dmesg | less

...otherwise the cape manager doesn't provide a lot of debugging information. What you're trying should work (the universaln overlay is intended to work with the default HDMI cape). I'll try to test this and see if I can figure out what's going wrong.

I am able to load the overlay, but dmesg shows an error related to P9 pin 41. It looks like the HDMI cape is setting a pinmux for this pin, but it should be free (it's not connected to the HDMI transmitter as part of the audio bus) so the universaln cape tries to claim it as well.

Can you provide me the exact kernel version you're running (uname -a) and the output of dmesg after you've tried to load the cape?

cdsteinkuehler commented 9 years ago

Using the -bone68 kernel, I don't see a problem other than the P9 pin 41 mentioned above, which looks like an issue with the HDMI overlay and not the cape-universaln overlay, so I'm closing this issue. If you can provide specific details to reproduce, or the HDMI actually cape needs to claim P9.41, I will re-open this issue and look into solutions.

Here´s my output. There's a conflict on P9.31.

I'm running bone47. Is there a way to update the kernel without having to flash the BBB again?

Thanks for looking into this :)

I'm generating the bone47 kernel source now, I suspect there's a goof (since fixed) in the HDMI overlay, but I'll reopen the issue until I can verify this is the case.

To upgrade your kernel, on recent Debian images, it's enough to run:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

For previous releases, there should be an /opt/scripts/tools/update_kernel.sh script you can run that will fetch and install the latest kernel.

cdsteinkuehler commented 9 years ago

Doh! I just realized you must be using an old copy of the universal overlay. This issue was fixed by jadonk back in May: https://github.com/cdsteinkuehler/beaglebone-universal-io/commit/2f42fb050abf6d783add6550e1686393426afffe

I suggest you get the latest version (the easiest way is to update your kernel) and you should be able to load the overlay along with HDMI.

Hi,

I am using beagle bone green running with u-boot 2016.11.rc3 kernel 4.4.27-bone-rt-r16, rootfs ubuntu 16.04. My uEnv.txt file is as below: cmdline=cape_disable=bone_capemgr.disable_partno=BB-BONELT-HDMI, BB-BONELT-HDMIN, BB-BONE-HDMI bone_capemgr.enable_partno=BB-UART1,BB-AAIM-LCD:00A1,BB-UART4,BB-UART2,BB-I2C1. On bootup it runs uenvcmd.

I have below pinmux conflict errors while loading dtbs:

Linux kernel developers have deprecated the mechanisms that are used for loading device tree overlays. You have to either load your overlays using uBoot overlays or use static device tree files. https://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#U-Boot_Overlays

Thank you for information. As mentioned earlier that i am able to load device tree overlays using kernel with u-boot 2016.11 and kernel 4.4.27-bone-rt. Sometimes I am getting pinmux conflicts error. I would like to know the process/sequence of loading dtbs in kernel.

Could you please share the documents it would be helpful for debugging? If I use u-boot overlays will it solve pinmux conflicts problem? What is the difference in u-boot overlays and kernel overlays? Please share your views.

Thanks, Mrudula
