Pull recent changes from kanjitalk755? #184

Is it possible to import the most recent changes in kanjitalk755's code? They seem very useful.

I tried kanjitalk755's repo. But it broke Mac OS X autoconf build and Linux Gnome GUI.

I'm happy with what I have now in Linux. In general, Mac OS X upgrades/breaks its build system way too often. If we don't keep autoconf build way, we will spend more time in fixing build system.

I back port their SDL2 features for Linux and Mac OS X. A PR was sent.

The testing takes me some time. I can play 256 color game Lemming again.
