Tiger Mosquito Suitability Index #61

Closed charliepascoe closed 3 years ago

charliepascoe commented 3 years ago

The definition is not correct: Definition: The climatic suitability index for the presence of the tiger mosquito is determined by January temperature and annual rainfall statistics. If the January temperature is below 0C and the annual rainfall below 500 mm, then the location is not suitable for the mosquito to survive the winter.

First according to section 1.2 of the c3S documentation, the index also considers summer temperature. Second the definition suggests a binary index (yes/no) but the calculation involves three sigmoidal functions: please replace the definition by the following text: Definition: this index describes the climatic suitability for the presence of the tiger mosquito based on January temperature (ideally above 30C) , summer temperature (ideally between 20 and 25 C) and annual precipitation (ideally above 850 nm) Suitability decreases gradually for values outside the ideal range.

Check numbers in H-M's suggested text and then update.

Copied from section 1.2 the suitability was reduced to zero when the annual rainfall was lower than 450 mm, and maximum suitability was reached when the annual rainfall was higher than 800 mm. For summer temperatures, the suitability was zero when temperatures were lower than 15 °C and higher than 30 °C, and maximum between 20 °C and 25 °C. For January temperatures, the suitability was zero when temperatures were lower than - 1°C and maximum when temperatures were higher than 3 °C.
