If opaque acrylic was used throughout, then it would not be necessary to have separate acrylic covers; the tiles themselves would be dry-wipeable.
By contrast with the wooden version, the week loops might end up being 'consumable' if they get dirtier and more scratched from use, whilst the wooden design allows the covers to be replaced, whilst keeping the (expensive) laser-cut tiles.
