1. The story: Soil moisture in the root zone influences biodiversity and plant communities. Moisture content in a fallow farm is generally uniform and low variability. In a restored wetland, moisture content is higher. Where restoration actions have created topographic variation and mixed soil types on the land surface, moisture variability is much greater. Future implications include: colonization by a wide variety of plant communities, generation of perpetually wet areas that promote colonization of desired wetland species: the niche species that belong in this environment, and potentially colonization by undesirable and opportunistic invasive species that are good first-colonizers of these very dry islands.
