Hi @jvollme thanks for you interest.
GroopM (and v2) itself has fallen into disrepair, as you surmised. However, several of the ideas from GroopM v2 have now been incorporated into https://github.com/rhysnewell/rosella and https://github.com/rhysnewell/aviary which seem to work better and is much easier to install i.e. are on bioconda.
I'll add a note to the README for others who are thinking along similar lines.

The installation instructions for groopm are not up to date anymore. It seems some specific forks/branches/commits need to be used in combination with some special installation steps to get groopM2 or even the original groopm running. The version deposited at pypi definitively does not work anymore.
However i see some groups are using groopm and groopm2. But i just can't find any information on which specific fork/branch i need to install and how. All workarounds that were suggested to me so far do not work.
Please, could you share any updated installation process that currently works?
