Rather than cluttering up my PATH with too many locations, I prefer to add
symlinks
to get some things into my PATH. This only works for spd if the symlink is
defined
with an absolute path. If the symlink is defined with a relative path, an
attempt to
launch spd fails with:

% spd
**************************************************************************
You must compile Sage first using 'make' in the Sage root directory.
(If you have already compiled Sage, you must set the SAGE_ROOT variable in
the file '/home/user/apps/bin/spd').

Note: I confirmed that sage-4.0.alpha0 can be started from both relative and
absolute
symlinks, but this installation was on a different computer (ubuntu 8.10 vs
xandros
for the one with spd), so perhaps there is some OS aspect that comes into play.
