Website Design #4

Closed cesardv closed 12 years ago

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Hi guys just wanted to start another little discussion on what our site will look like-graphically/aesthetically....

I found a very nice CSS template see it here: http://www.freecsstemplates.org/preview/petpaws/

That looks very cool and it's dog/animal related. I wanted to try to have our website have a look like this...

What do you think?

Do you guys have any ideas, comments, etc?

ghost commented 12 years ago

I like it. It's probably a good idea to use a template since we have all the content. I will probably have a Part A for everyone to look at by tonight or tomorrow.

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Ok great. I will use that as a base for our design. I might change the colors a bit though. Not gonna use the exact template cuz then we'd have to give credit to freecsstemplates.org, but I'll make something very much like it! Keep me posted.

tlucas2 commented 12 years ago

I do like this template I have sent email of information to u guys, the pie chart can be changed into the compass we talked about in class, I just thought it might be a good start.

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Eric I think Tracye sent a word doc with data, are u able to open those on your Mac? What would be the best format so that we can start making the database? You just need the text right?

ghost commented 12 years ago

I can open docs. We need the text, but I will also generate keys in the database.

well, I'll be working on the website for bit tonite, trying to get the css "templates" and stuff going , keep me posted if you need help with part A, or if you want me to take the html of website's About Page (Part A) and "style" it, etc. Are you already using the PHP server for your pages?

ghost commented 12 years ago

The files I have locally are able to interpret PHP. I can set it up on my remote server tomorrow.

haha funny coincidence... I just sent an email about this haha... but no I haven't received anything back... I was wondering if we had to send him a blank email again... like we did for the very first "project"

ghost commented 12 years ago

I think so, but I did and still didn't receive anything. Weird, must be on the same wavelength haha

Yeah lol Eric, I'm working on the site's template CSS right now...

also, what do you guys say for buying woofpack.info ? I noticed it's 2.99/yr on namecheap... lol just an idea. We could point ironduke.cs.gsu.edu to woofpack.info which would hosted on Eric's server... what'd you think?

ghost commented 12 years ago

We would have to register it through BlueHost (who I host with), because namecheap has this in their terms and agreement :(

"You agree that you will not transfer any domain name registered through Namecheap to another domain name registrar during the first sixty (60) calendar days from its initial registration date."

Unfortunately, the same domain is $11.95/yr for me.

geez that sucks, I didn't think about that... oh well nevermind then.... yeah looks like a lot of registrars require the domainname to be at least registred for 60 days before letting it go... :/

ghost commented 12 years ago

registrars are mean. I had a domain name that I was holding onto for a year and never renewed it. Well, tried to buy it back from GoDaddy and they sent it to auction where someone else bought it. This dude contacts me about 3 months later and wants hundreds … registered it originally for 11.95.

Yeah I've heard there's a lot of "cyber squatting" and extorsion-like practices with domain names... it's crazy

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Alright, I'm done for today. Been working on this all day. Got a decent template going... Check it out at http://cesardv.github.com/wolfpackHCI/ let me know what you think...

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Eric send me an email if you need help with the About page(part A). For now I think we can just put what we have (the home page and our About page/part A) on ironduke.cs.gsu.edu/~wolfpack/ Don't need to bother redirecting to ur server for now... as he's just looking for an about page with Part A.

You can take the homepage html and add stuff inside the

labeled "content " and create an about page for part A. We can use that as a template since the global.css can used to style all our pages.

tlucas2 commented 12 years ago

Love the page, I have sent email on all the 12 dogs we will be using and the food info, by email. I look at the videos and am not sure how to push the content I've gathered into yet. But it is all there to place into the site

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Tracye, If you cloned the repo as I showed you in the videos, then you just place the files inside the repo folder (wolfpackHCI) inside a folder you can name "docs". Then you would do a "git add -A" command, a "git commit -a- m "msg here" and then followed by a "git push origin tracye" command. This is all using the bash terminal.

If you're using the GUI then my videos will be of no help... but the GUI is simple enough to use, IF you understand HOW git works first so watching the videos will help.

I do show on github that you had created a fork of the wolfpackHCI repo (by hitting the Fork button on the github website). If this is what you did then we won't be able to see what you're adding, commiting and pushing to your "tracye" branch. You needed to git clone the cesardv/wolfpackHCI.git repo, like I did in the videos. I really suggest this video http://vimeo.com/17118008 too.

Also, these are older videos that I created last semester for another group project I worked on. These might be useful as well. find them here: http://www.screenr.com/user/cesardv

tlucas2 commented 12 years ago

Ok since i didn't clone it and and forked is there a video where i can upload the doc i watched the vidoes but that was after what id already done the fork

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Tracye what you can do is just click "Unfork" on the gihub website on your profile. But this does not matter as you can just clone the repo again. To do this choose a good place/folder on ur PC to create the repo and run the command "git clone git@github.com:cesardv/wolfpackHCI.git " --this will clone the repo into your current folder (assuming you already installed and setup git as shown here.

Let me know if you still can't add files to the repo folder, commit them and push them.

tlucas2 commented 12 years ago

I added the file to the repo but it won't let me push it, I did download to this site but I don't know if any of you can see it

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Tracye, I don't have a lot of information to help you here... did Git give you an error message? Can you email me a screenshot of what happens when you use git push ?

cengstrom1 commented 12 years ago

OK, team...after being on vacation a week for Spring Break, I am caught up. Thanks for your work during the break. Time permitting, let's meet after today's class if it lets out early enough.

cesardv commented 12 years ago

Tracye are you still having issues with Git? We can schedule a https://join.me/ session whenever if you want and I can help you with it remotely.

hey guys just wanted you to check out the new landing site I created... http://cesardv.github.com/wolfpackHCI/index.html I played around and created a cool new "futuristic" css template for it, it's not finished but just wanted to get your opinion on it, as far as the theme etc. So again, I've not finished it! And there's tons of cosmetic issues to polish but I wanted to get u guys a feel for the overall "theme" to see if you liked it... be honest. It won't hurt my feelings if we end up using it or not... I was just practicing my brand-new CSS skills lol

ghost commented 12 years ago

Not sure how the futuristic theme ties into dogs, but it looks good otherwise for the purpose of a group page. I guess the only thing I see wrong with it is the location of the menu. I used the developer tools in google chrome to test some css modifications. Try:

menu {

float: left;
margin-left:50px;

}

I like the layout but not sure about the futuristic theme though, am thinking a dog paw or dog related background would be preferred, because without knowing what the site was about or reading about the background throws you off makes you wonder if your at the right site/place, but I do like the layout and information provided on the site. Great job

@ejames788 Eric, I'll try the fixes tonite. I kinda wanted to have a "blueprint-workshop-y" sort of landing page. And then I watched Tron legacy over the weekend and this was the result lol... but anyways our landing site does not have to have a template or be fancy or even be related to dogs at all! lol That was sorta my thinking anyways...
