Investigate if open source tools such as ‘countrycode’

can be used to convert country names (and their variants) in any language to the ISO country code for the filter. a) if possible and b) how much effort would it take.

There may be other tools.

Or would the Country Named Authority List produced by the EU (includes languages as well) be of use?

Most OS tools appear to be implemented in Python.

Based on the approach those tools use and a library such as https://salsa.debian.org/iso-codes-team/iso-codes, it could be feasible to develop out own solution.
