Standard names: Propose new additions to the standard names table for methane forcing for use in CMIP7 #213

On behalf of the Aerosol and Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project for CMIP7, I would like to propose standard names for the radiative fluxes from a diagnostic call to a model's radiation scheme using a reference methane field. These flux diagnostics are analogous to those from a diagnostic call to a model's radiation scheme with a reference ozone field (covered under issue#158) except that here, they relate to methane. This issue will only cover the diagnostics for the top-of-atmosphere (whereas issue#158 covered surface, 3D and top-of-atmosphere fluxes). Surface and 3D diagnostics for methane (that are not required for CMIP7) will be covered in a separate issue.

The proposed names for the corresponding top-of-atmosphere (TOA) diagnostics are:

Name: toa_outgoing_shortwave_flux_assuming_reference_mole_fraction_of_methane_in_air Units: W/m2 Metadata: The abbreviation "toa" means top of atmosphere. The term "shortwave" means shortwave radiation. The TOA outgoing shortwave flux is the reflected and scattered solar radiative flux i.e. the "upwelling" TOA shortwave flux, sometimes called the "outgoing shortwave radiation" or "OSR". In accordance with common usage in geophysical disciplines, "flux" implies per unit area, called "flux density" in physics. A phrase "assuming_condition" indicates that the named quantity is the value which would obtain if all aspects of the system were unaltered except for the assumption of the circumstances specified by the condition.

"Clear sky" means in the absence of clouds.

Name: toa_outgoing_longwave_flux_assuming_reference_mole_fraction_of_methane_in_air Units: W m-2 Metadata: A phrase assuming_condition indicates that the named quantity is the value which would obtain if all aspects of the system were unaltered except for the assumption of the circumstances specified by the condition. "longwave" means longwave radiation. "toa" means top of atmosphere. The TOA outgoing longwave flux is the upwelling thermal radiative flux, often called the "outgoing longwave radiation" or "OLR". In accordance with common usage in geophysical disciplines, "flux" implies per unit area, called "flux density" in physics.

Name: reference_mole_fraction_of_methane_in_air Units: mol mol-1 Metadata: This methane field acts as a reference methane field in a diagnostic call to the radiation scheme. Mole fraction is used in the construction mole_fraction_of_X_in_Y, where X is a material constituent of Y.

Thanks for considering this proposal.

Thank you for your proposal. These terms will be added to the cfeditor (http://cfeditor.ceda.ac.uk/proposals/1) shortly. Your proposal will then be reviewed and commented on by the community and Standard Names moderator.

Hi Fiona,

I have added your terms to the CF editor. These are nicely consistent with the previous ozone forcing related names which have been previously accepted into the table, so I imagine they may be suitable with little amendments. I will get back to you soon with some more feedback on how to proceed.

Best regards, Ellie

Hi Fiona @fmoconnor,

Thank you for your patience.

In the Guidelines for Construction of CF Names, the unit W m-2 is generally described using the phrase radiative_flux, but as it can be assumed, given the context, that the longwave and shortwave fluxes referred to are radiative fluxes, and this is explained in the description (as well as this being the format of the earlier accepted names), I think this should be acceptable. I have labelled this with "accept within 7 days", and if there are no further comments/issues in this time then the names will be accepted.

Best wishes, Ellie

Thanks Ellie for your positive comments! @efisher008

Hi Fiona @fmoconnor,

Apologies for the late response as I was at the CF 2024 workshop and then away on leave, I have recently got back from this. The 7-day period has passed and your names have now been accepted to the Standard Names Table. They will be published in v87 of the table, which is expected to be released in November this year.

Best wishes, Ellie

All the names proposed in this issue have been published in V87 of the standard name table, so closing this one now.
