Standard names: *Energy Flux into Ocean* #43

Open abiardeau opened 6 months ago

abiardeau commented 6 months ago

Hello, I am Aurore BIARDEAU from Mercator Ocean international, working for Copernicus Marine service. Date : 13-05-2024

We are in the process of implementing a new variable in the Copernicus Marine service and we would be happy to have your feedback on our proposal :

standard_name : wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water (Inspired by existing standard_name wind_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water)

unit : W m-2

Following your feedback, we could also proposewave_mixing_momentum_flux_into_sea_water

I can provide more information from my expert colleagues if needed, Kind regards, Aurore

Thank you for your proposal. These terms will be added to the cfeditor (http://cfeditor.ceda.ac.uk/proposals/1) shortly. Your proposal will then be reviewed and commented on by the community and Standard Names moderator.

Dear Aurore @abiardeau

I think wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water would be OK as a standard name. It needs a definition, of course, especially to describe the energy source. Thanks for the proposal.

Best wishes

Jonathan

Dear @JonathanGregory

Thanks a lot for your quick feedback. After some discussions, we thought wave_momentum_flux_into_sea_water is more general and appropriate (as surface momentum is not only for mixing). Would it work ?

JonathanGregory commented 6 months ago

Momentum flux and energy flux are both reasonable physical quantities, but not the same, of course. Can you describe in some more detail what this quantity is, or give a literature reference that describes it? Thanks.

Dear Aurore,

I have added your proposed name wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water to the editor, and will wait for more discussion on the format before proceeding. It would be useful to have a description for this name to help clarify its use, and to distinguish between momentum_flux and energy_flux as @JonathanGregory says.

Best regards, Ellie

Dear Ellie and Jonathan,

Thanks for your answers. Thewave_momentum_flux_in_sea_water would be the amount of stress that is available at the ocean surface as dynamical boundary condition (to generate surface currents, controlling ocean-atmosphere fluxes and surface mixing)

for instance, eq 9 of this paper https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/2014JC010565

Dear Aurore

We already have standard names for the components of the momentum flux from surface waves: surface_downward_eastward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves and surface_downward_northward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves. The help text notes that "Sea surface waves" means the stress associated with form drag over sea surface waves. Is that what you mean? We do not currently have a standard name for the magnitude of this vector. If you need it, I think it would be magnitude_of_surface_downward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves, like the existing standard name magnitude_of_surface_downward_stress.

Best wishes

Jonathan

Dear Aurore @abiardeau,

Are you able to clarify whether your proposed name has the meaning that Jonathan @JonathanGregory has suggested and would be suitable as something like magnitude_of_surface_downward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves?

Best wishes, Ellie

Hi Aurore @abiardeau,

I hope your summer is going well. Now that your other batch of proposed standard names have been accepted, would you have any time to dedicate to progressing this proposal? It would be great to see it moving towards acceptance.

Best, Ellie
