Standard names: *Energy Flux into Ocean* #43

Hello, I am Aurore BIARDEAU from Mercator Ocean international, working for Copernicus Marine service. Date : 13-05-2024

We are in the process of implementing a new variable in the Copernicus Marine service and we would be happy to have your feedback on our proposal :

standard_name : wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water (Inspired by existing standard_name wind_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water)

unit : W m-2

Following your feedback, we could also proposewave_mixing_momentum_flux_into_sea_water

I think wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water would be OK as a standard name. It needs a definition, of course, especially to describe the energy source. Thanks for the proposal.

Thanks a lot for your quick feedback. After some discussions, we thought wave_momentum_flux_into_sea_water is more general and appropriate (as surface momentum is not only for mixing). Would it work ?

Momentum flux and energy flux are both reasonable physical quantities, but not the same, of course. Can you describe in some more detail what this quantity is, or give a literature reference that describes it? Thanks.

I have added your proposed name wave_mixing_energy_flux_into_sea_water to the editor, and will wait for more discussion on the format before proceeding. It would be useful to have a description for this name to help clarify its use, and to distinguish between momentum_flux and energy_flux as @JonathanGregory says.

Thanks for your answers. Thewave_momentum_flux_in_sea_water would be the amount of stress that is available at the ocean surface as dynamical boundary condition (to generate surface currents, controlling ocean-atmosphere fluxes and surface mixing)

Dear Aurore

We already have standard names for the components of the momentum flux from surface waves: surface_downward_eastward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves and surface_downward_northward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves. The help text notes that "Sea surface waves" means the stress associated with form drag over sea surface waves. Is that what you mean? We do not currently have a standard name for the magnitude of this vector. If you need it, I think it would be magnitude_of_surface_downward_stress_due_to_sea_surface_waves, like the existing standard name magnitude_of_surface_downward_stress.
