I've changed my mind and now think that it might be better to explicitly only use ISO8601's "textual representation", but still by default use the mixed Gregorian/Julian calendar as defined by Udunits (like CF) both for numerical-values-since and ISO8601-style-strings. So closing this PR, might open a new one.
