This week's challenges

Figuring out how to navigate all the information in GitHub Using CodePen and figuring that work out There is a lot of work for the semseter! I'm trying to get a handle on how best to organize it for myself, I feel like it would be easy for things to get lost in the cracks. Also I was a little confused if these weekly reports are reports on the past week or the current one. So this report encompases what I did between 1/31-2/7.

This week's challenges

Started looking at the special works projects. Immediately ran into difficulties in creating the point data. I can't import it! I thought the problem was because it was in degrees/min/sec but varying sources say that's ok/not ok to import into Arc. Then I ran into issues trying to convert it in excel. So I'm tabling this issue for the week. Besides that, I'm having a little trouble completing things like the readings, I keep forgetting to work on that aspect. It's a bit easier to keep up with tutorials and notebooks.

Weekly Report 2021-22-02 (Week 5)

What I Did

Independent Work

• continued working on Special Works 2 (successfully imported points! Now looking for the DEM model to create basemap)
• working on Files and Folders Notebook

  Consultancy Project

• Meeting with team to set up website, started looking for data sets (1 hr)

  Problems

• Forbidden access to the geoethics paper in the notebook. Not sure how to fix this? But I think a lot of people had this problem
• Poor time management this week. I blame it on being my last week in the DR.
• I think I'm pretty caught up on my independent work though, so I'm not too worried about making it up next week.
• From our team meeting, we decided to work on two papers at once for this week, since the data sets for the paper we originally chose are from a now defunct website. So the other paper may be a more feasible option.

Weekly Report 2021-1-03 (Week 6)

What I Did

Independent Work

• Almost finished with SP1.

  Consultancy Project

• Found data sets, switched paper (the first paper had a lot of problems)
• First blog post!

  Problems

• Again, didn't get as much done this week as I wanted. I am back in Williamsburg now though so things should go more smoothly
• Special Works: could not figure out how to get the letters to appear on my markers on the map for SP1
• Special Works: having problems with SP2, finding a DEM layer and creating the fishnet. When I tried to make a fishnet it just generated 1 big square...
• Consultancy: found the shapefile and study area data. Having trouble finding the forest fires data. See the blog post here. Also the website is still in development, please excuse the mess.

and I got this error: HTTPError: HTTP Error 403: Forbidden @dt-woods

I found the error. This code assumes that you have changed your working directory to the /arcgis/home/data folder. If you did not change your working directory, then you get the forbidden error when trying to save to /arcgis, because you do not have write privileges to this directory. Try changing your working directory (os.chdir) or changing the folder path for pdf_filename by including the right folders.

Weekly Report 2021-1-08 (Week 7)

What I Did

• Organized my files in AGOL into folders! More organization is yet to come but I think that's a good start.
• Made progress on the Files and Folders notebook
• Finished a AGOL tutorial for creating maps and analyzing species richness (1 hr)

• Met with team, the goal for next week is to have the first video up. Hopefully we'll be able to get our data video up pretty soon as well as we get more information about where it comes from

• Still running into problems with the code. I ended up just skipping a couple sections. I think I'm going to move on the next one (is that possible? Do I need things generated by the first one?)

Weekly Report 2021-1-15 (Week 8)

What I Did

• Recorded stuff for info video
  • Uploaded video!
  • Our paper is pretty short, so the summary video ended up being only about 8 minutes. Does it need to be longer?
• Looked for new data, starting to organize data
• Met with group to go over video design, next steps as we get closer to client meeting

  Problems

• I had a lot of problems with special works 2. I think I understand most of the GIS related ones, but my maps don't look exactly the same. I wonder if I rounded/averaged differently than the paper because my values are not quite the same. Other than that it looks pretty similar. I wrote up my methods in varying detail on the google doc
• Had a couple problems with the code, but that wasn't really my focus this week so I also didn't put much time into it.

Next Week

• I have a midterm in another class on Thursday, so I don't want to assign myself too much for this week in this class

Weekly Report 2021-1-22 (Week 9)

What I Did

• Working on recreating methods
  • Random Points (This did not create clumps when I dissolved the feature, so I used ADM2 boundaries as the border. Hopefully this will create more clumped data that will lead to better visualizations as we do the analysis.) FirePointsProxyADM2
  • Project to PCS WGS 1984 World Equildistance
  • Integrate to within the selected distance: doesn't specify to what distance this is (some googling says GPS is off by about 20 m so will use that)
  • Collect Events -> ICOUNT
  • Calculate Distance Band from Nearest Neighbor (Average found to be 618, they mention they used a slightly smaller number than the average obtained so I will use 545 going forward, maximum of 2534 used as beginning distance)
  • Incremental Spatial Autocorrelation: I got this error WARNING 001532: * At least one distance increment resulted in features with no neighbors which may invalidate the significance of the corresponding results.
  • Hot Spot Analysis
  • IDW (left everything on the default settings since nothing is specified

Problems

• Running into a bit of a problem with SP3. My original raster was projected differently than the one in the videos, so I think I may have made a mistake in putting it in a projected coordinate system. My Flow Accumulation raster looks good, but my pour point is definitely being put in the wrong place (somewhere with 0 accumulation!). I feel like this is a projection issue because I'm not sure what else it would be. Also, I'm just using tools directly for the first pass at this as I work out the issues. Then I plan to automate it for multiple in Python. Is there a reason you work in the Python window rather than the notebook?
