I've had a lot of work for other classes and am focusing on job apps, I intend to get working on Special Works next week.
Okay. Good luck at your job interviews.
Okay. Good luck at your job interviews.
Thanks! They were just applications, but I'm hoping to hear back!
Streamlining this special report to just a few sections, I like it better this way.
Week 5 "Urban Thermal Taskforce" meeting, created Weebly website and made a general timeline of work on the project (30 min) Weekly engagement- made "Ethics Consideration" post, responded and read through all discussion topics (40 min) Started SW1 (10 min, see "This week's challenges") Geoethics lecture/slideshow (10 min) Examined what Google Takeout collects (5 min) Listened to a student podcast on Geoethics and Geofencing (8 min)
Consultancy formed, client meeting date chosen, web presence established with title/logo (website is very messy)
Tried to start on SW1 but couldn't access climate data website. I didn't download my personal Google Takeout file because Google said it would take days.
For Google Takeout, just try accessing the mapped data.
Week 6 Worked on client presentation on Google Slides, specifically analyzing the methods used in the heat island/redlining paper (30 min) Weekly engagement- made "methods" post, responded, read and reacted to all discussion topics, including past weeks discussions that were posted late (30 min) Made a weekly blog on the consultancy website updating our client presentation progress, cleaned up website a bit (10 min) Special Works 3 (see challenges)- Loaded Napa DEM into ArcPro, how do I pre-process the raster to ensure no "holes"? (10 min) Watched "time management" video (1 min)
Consultancy formed, client meeting date chosen, web presence established with title/logo (website is very messy). Working on weekly website updates
Was very hesitant on posting geospatial method of the week compared to other posts because I have only taken Intro, and the methods shown on other weeks seemed very complex and intimidating! I am glad I was able to find something that seemed new and unique.
Confused on pre-processing the DEM, not sure if I learned that in Intro. I also only downloaded the watershed DEM, since they separated Napa County DEM's into watershed and nonwatershed. Should I download both?
Looking ahead at flow direction and flow accumulation for SW3, I am very interested in the process of how it is calculated, even if I was not extremely proficient with Arcade expressions in Intro.
@jacobgalla99, sorry I missed you in my zoom room today. How'd did the processing go?
I used the tool on the Napa DEM for Special Works 3. After many hours, it reached about 12% done, and then gave me the above error messages.
I see. By looking at the documentation, there are a lot of things to consider when running this tool. Some follow-ups:
^Here were the parameters for running the tool. The coordinate system was NAD 1983 StatePlane California II FIPS 0402 (US Feet), which means I should project it, right?
Thanks for the help!
From the documentation:
It is recommended to have your data in a projected coordinate system with units of meters.
Therefore, the "US feet" may impose a problem.
Also, try simplifying the problem by changing the Time Configuration from Multiple Days to TimeWithinDay and choose a day of the year and start at 00:00 and end at 23:59.
I projected the layer to NAD 1927 California (Teale) Albers (Meters) and changed the time configuration to TimeWithinDay, but the process still came back with some errors, unfortunately.
Week 7 Introductory client presentation almost ready to be recorded, presentation complete, group meeting (30 min) Weekly engagement- made "Question of the Week" post, responded, read and reacted to all discussion topics, including past weeks discussions that were posted late (30 min) Progress Report Meeting (30 min) Website work (10 min) Special Works 3 (30 min)
Consultancy formed, client meeting date chosen, web presence established with title/logo (website is very messy). Working on weekly website updates
A lot of struggles with the solar radiation tool that I had to present for another class, luckily I was granted an extension to Wednesday.
Jake: this error message suggests that you are writing the output to a temp folder and that perhaps a file is open (already in use) or the folder permissions don't allow writing new files. If you haven't already, set up a new file geodatabase (FGDB), set it as your default FGDB in the environments and in the tool options be sure outputs are saving here. I've found that some ArcGIS tools work only when FGBDs are explicitly used.

Thank you for the suggestions, Professor! I set up a file geodatabase on my Desktop "Solar Radiation Tool" and ensured my output "SolarOutput" was saved there, but it unfortunately came back with the same errors. Then, I realized my ArcPro was still in Version 2.6 and not 2.7, so I updated it. The update seemed to freeze at a certain point, so I closed the installer in the middle of the update. I thought this was a problem, but ArcPro is in the latest version now!
Just ran it again, I have parameters set for "Time Within Day" from 0-24 hours and the raster data is projected in meters. Yet the program seems like it is still freezing for "calculating horizon and radiation". I was given an option to choose another tool for the presentation if this one didn't work out, and I am considering that.
I'm trying smaller and smaller resolutions, but the processing time is still taking very long.
Week 8 Weekly engagement- responded, read and reacted to all discussion topics (15 min) Consultancy meeting (30 min) Data video/presentation, grabbing some landsat files to overlap with redlined areas (90 min) Website work (weekly blog, article link, youtube videos, headers, cleaned up) (40 min) Meeting w/ Professor Davis to help with geoprocess for another class, made a presentation around the geoprocess (60 min)
Consultancy formed, client meeting date chosen, web presence established with title/logo, 2/3 videos ready- all that's left is geoprocess video and some format of the progress report. I plan on making the website look much nicer, with official profiles/bios like the other sites.
After client meeting Wednesday, need to get back into Special Works to select which projects should not be on the final. I'm going to need quite a few landsat files for all the cities, and I'm not very clear on transforming the data to Land Surface Temp data.
Week 9 Weekly engagement- responded, read, or reacted to all discussion topics (15 min) Progress Report (website, rehearsing, videos) (150 min) Client meeting and following write up on performance accomplishments (35 min)
Consultancy meeting is done! Onto finishing my checklist and working on special works. I also finished an NDVI presentation for my Conservation GIS class!
The client meeting went VERY smoothly, not many challenges! The rush to prepare a good progress report was a little stressful.
Week 10 Weekly engagement- responded, read, or reacted to all discussion topics [except performance accomplishments one, I want to take some time later this week to have that well-composed] (15 min)
I plan on doing my podcast with my consultancy group soon! I also gave a group presentation on NDVI and carrying capacity in the American Prairie Reserve for my Conservation GIS class.
I got the least work done this week in this course all semester. Some of that was procrastination, but I also had a tough midterm and assignments for other classes. I definitely intend to work on the checklist and special works this week.
Week 11 Weekly engagement- responded, read, or reacted to all discussion topics (15 min) Read metadata intro (2 min) Watched "Intro to Notebooks" (16 min) Completed "Intro to Notebooks" and "Python Fundamentals" (45 min) Special Works 4, addresses are in text file (15 min)
Working through notebooks and Special Works.
Thanks for helping me access the data for SW6, going to focus my efforts on that one this week.
Week 12 Weekly engagement- responded, read, or reacted to all discussion topics (15 min) More Python Fundamentals notebook (30 min)
Working through notebooks, Special Works efforts are coming later in the month.
I really struggled having time for anything this week. I went out of town this weekend, had to finish a 2000-word research paper, conduct many interviews for independent research, and worked on more job applications. Luckily, this is the only class I have left with substantial assignments/work I need to finish, so I can direct all my energy towards that in the coming weeks.
Week 13 Weekly engagement- responded, read, or reacted to all discussion topics (15 minutes) Special Works 1 (90 minutes) Special Works 3 (30 minutes) Watched "Sharing on ArcGIS Online" and "Introduction to Programming" Videos (30 minutes)
Total time: 2 hours, 45 min
Plan on making my video tutorial on Special Works 1. Going well, but got stuck on an attribute join. Followed most of the steps for watershed delineation on SW3 and completed some of the steps but went back to fill any potential holes, and the program wouldn't let me. I plan on coming to office hours tomorrow.
I got sick this week, and I am still looking for jobs, which restricts time I have for classes. Still, this is the class I intend to focus my energy the most on for the rest of the year, as I don't have many assignments in my other classes.
Week 14 SW2 (60 minutes) SW1 (20 minutes) Prof Davis meeting (45 minutes) Performance Accomplishments questions (30 minutes) "Files and Folders" Notebook (30 minutes) "Working with Data" Notebook (30 minutes) "The File Geodatabase" Notebook (30 minutes) "Geoprocessing with the ArcGIS API" Notebook (30 minutes) Watched geoprocessing tutorials for SW3 (30 minutes [sped up]) Watched geoprocessing tutorials for SW4 (56 minutes [sped up])) Listened to Episode 662 of VerySpatial Podcast (23 minutes [sped up]) "Display a Map" Developer Tutorial (10 minutes) "Display a Pop-up" Developer Tutorial (20 minutes) "Display a Scene" Developer Tutorial (10 minutes) "Display your Location" Developer Tutorial (10 minutes) "Create a New Feature Layer" Developer Tutorial (15 minutes) "Edit feature data" Developer Tutorial (10 minutes) SW4, Geocoded layer through Excel, now in ArcPro (50 minutes) Friday, worked on SW1, SW3 with John (90 minutes)
Full steam ahead on Special Works! Mainly done with SW1 solution, mainly done with SW2, I need to make video on SW2 and make geoethics podcast.
Ran into a lot of glitches with notebooks, will post on discussion board when I have time. Kernel keeps freezing in "Geoprocessing with arcpy" when trying to get statistics.

arcpy.CalculateStatistics_management(rast_file) always crashes/freezes the kernel and it just never runs.
It took a couple of minutes, but it finished. Try restarting the kernel and clearing all output, and going through again from the top.
As soon as you sent this, it finally ran for me! Thank you so much!
Week 15 Completed Course Evaluation (15 minutes) Graphical Models Tutorial (26 minutes [sped up]) Special Works 3 (60 minutes) Prof Davis meeting (15 minutes) Organized my AGOL Content and wrote about metadata in Performance Accomplishments (160 minutes) Created file geodatabase for organizing datasets (5 minutes). SW1, made the symbology and exported to layer file. (40 minutes) SW2 (300 minutes) Finished Geoethics Podcast Script and Podcast (30 minutes) Made SW4 Demo Video and Documentation (280 minutes) Finished SW3, successful ModelBuilder run (50 minutes)
Special Works 2 is all that is left! I finished almost up to intermediate solution, but calculated my seasonal averages incorrectly. I do need help putting the calculate area formula into ModelBuilder for SW3, but that's the very last step. Finish performance accomplishments, left to do questions 1 and 2 mainly.
"Geoprocessing with ArcPy" notebook, may just skip this if I can check off 95% of the checklist.
Getting my vaccine on Tuesday, hopefully I'll feel fine for finishing Performance Accomplishments and re-doing SW2.
