My response:
Thanks for the suggestion Chris. I like the idea and it ought to be technically feasible, ultimately I see it as a policy question, or actually a couple related policy questions -
1) Does the client want control over the messaging? Realistically I would imagine foster parents are probably direct emailing their workers already, so they may not have control whether they want it or not, but historically DHS/DCF has been hesitant to relinquish control (for example, the file download discussion we had this week).
2) Would we want a notification to appear in the system of record (SACWIS)? If not, then no problem, but if so we would need to figure out how that should work since of course the user doesn't need to actually send an email after opening the external email program.
I'm going to log it in our github tracker as a priority 4 future enhancement to discuss in any potential requirements discussions.
Suggestion from Chris (christopher.santos-lang@cgi.com):
Would it be possible to let the user use their normal email program? If the user tries to create a message, launch their default email program with the "To" prefilled. When a message is sent to the provider, send it to their regular email inbox (with a link to open the portal). You can still display a history of messages eWiSACWIS knows about, but I am thinking their default email program would allow them to forward messages to/from their other contacts and will be checked more regularly.
