Despite the unit card being listed in his character trait, Sabretusks don't actually get +8 defense when you recruit them into his army. I believe the bears and wyvern also don't get the bonus but I haven't personally checked these. Note that the bonus is not necessarily limited to single entities, giant spiders for example do get the bonus.
