Can't scroll thumbnails on mobile chrome on android

I have a new moto g phone with android kitkat. I can change w/l with single finger swipe, change zoom with pinch, but I can't find a way of scrolling through the thumbnails: this is necessary because not all thumbnails can fit into the screen at one time.

Did you try clicking the scroll button (three horizontal lines)? It works for me on my iPad. I'll need help with debugging this on other devices as I don't have an android device
