We've been using some informal style best practices, but we can adopt one formally and make a note of it in the Contributing section of the README.

Originally flagged by @jaimergp in #75:

The text uses "open-source" and "open source" almost interchangeably. The latter appears more often if you need to decide for one. This is often a matter of taste but we should decide on one (and maybe add a note about it?)
