@vincent-czi -- there's a lot of little code changes wrapped in here (will make smaller PRs from here on out now that you're actively in the codebase :).

For now, would love if you could just do some testing in localhost & let me know if you run into any unexpected behavior or weird bugs.

Will merge once I hear from @alliblk re: scientifically-relevant code snippet above + your user testing. Thank you!!
