Leaving this as a draft right now since we still need to discuss about if we want to continue using SSO or indeed kill it.

Given the limited amount of discussion on the SSO topic I've marked this ready for review so that we can get going and at least have it. For now without SSO, so that we don't lock anyone out down the road. But we'll be able to easily re-enable it.
