Hi,

Very excited to see this project. I wasn't sure the best way to contact you so I figured I would post an issue here.

I started on converting your hand drawn schematic. wip

The goal is to make a self contained board that would fit in a small enclosure.

Thanks

Hey Charlie, Good to hear from you again and hope your doing well. Not to annoy you, but please may I ask again will a final product be available soon. Have ants in my pants waiting to hear of the news. Also will there be a Pre-Announcement of release and international shipping costs in order to know how much final costs are including shipping.

   Cheers Justin
charcole commented 6 years ago

@fd69 Not annoying me at all, nice to have people interested in this. Bit of pressure though :) I’ve been struggling to find time for it this year which has meant things have slowed down quite a bit. Doubt the Kickstarter will happen this year. Sorry, know that’s not what you want to hear. Have been thinking of doing a small run instead. Will let you and everyone else know if I do. Small run would be more expensive though which I’d feel isn’t giving people good value for money

Xanowrath commented 6 years ago

Joined just to say thank you for doing this. I have been wanting to use my old Super Scope for a long time now and I don't have a place for a CRT. I will totally help with funding if you need it.

fd69 commented 6 years ago

That's ok Charlie, just please try never to let this project Fizzle out it's far to important of a masterpiece. And as you know there are many people hanging out for your product (No Pressure) LOL. As for a small run, even if it did work out a bit less value for money it would be more than made up for just by possessing and using Nes Zappa gun shooting ducks on big flat screen and bringing back my childhood. You know what I mean, so I would be more than keen to purchase from small run before kick starter even happens. I'm in Australia and with shipping it could be expensive. But totally worth it to shoot those nasty ducks straight of my big screen. Cheers Justin

Id put the money up to help you start this investment wise just to beable to play duck hunt on a modern big screen. Like i dont think you understand what youve created or how much its worth lol. If 8bitdo can make bluetooth super nintendo controllers... You CAN DO THIS.

But seriously if you need help getting things together investment wise i think some of us would gladly jump in or you could "sell" beta builds to us for undisclosed amounts and start that way.

Im launching a retro arcade for a weekend here in new york in june. To roll out duck hunt in a 55inch tv would be well worth ANY price.

Ive read this thread and can tell you I'd be interested in one of these. For me to grow up on duck hunt and all the other great games, I'd love to introduce my kids to the same experience. Games nowadays are over complicated and can't hold the attention of kids like the old school systems did back in the day. I'm hoping that this comes to the point where I can buy a completed setup and play duck hunt once again with my kids. I did send an email to your Yahoo the other day @charcole.

@charcole I saw that post you made, "@fd69 Not annoying me at all, nice to have people interested in this. To be honest, I would be actually leaning MORE towards a small run production lol! I would pay any of the expensive costs you mentioned to get a unit like this for my arcade light gun units and quite happily too I might add :) If the unit works as intended, I would say that is PLENTY good enough value for the Money spent towards an arcade machine light gun version of the LCDzapper

Drexxau commented 6 years ago

@charcole I'm interested too. Would even pay a 100$ or more, to get one of these. Just need to know if this is playable with a Lightgun from PS1 like G-Con 45? If so... take my money!!

twur commented 6 years ago

Hi Charlie, as others have said, good luck on this project. I'll be following this thread in order to check on your progress towards a first small run of your hardware!

lgosson commented 6 years ago

@charcole You could consider doing preorders with an expected shipment date that would give you time to source and build the units. Also I don't think you should worry about the price. Its not your responsibility to make it affordable, things cost what they cost. Be sure to compensate yourself generously in your price for your time and effort. This looks like a great product and I can't wait to buy one.

DieKatzchen commented 6 years ago

The thing about the price, is that while it may end up being pricey for a light gun, it's a universal solution. It works with multiple systems, so I only need one.

wilhouse55 commented 6 years ago

Charcole,

I looked it up and I've been following this thread since 6/2017. It's been cool and exciting to see the evolution of this and be a part of the discussion.

I have many light gun games besides duck hunt, including various Time Crisis games for the PS, and a vampire game, (can't remember the name). I've been following this because we've been excited abut the prospect to play this on our big LCD tv's.

I'm sure I speak for many of us that at this point getting one of these, price would generally be no object (unless it is like $1,000...). And I for one would be happy to have a beta test version, and assist with beta testing, as long as I could return it for a new one at possibly a discounted price or something.

Keep up the good work and know you have many fans that are eager for this to be ready to play. regards ml

I think when people speak of price they should speak for themselves and no-one else!!!!. Many people have different incomes n bills (YEH). People have different Exchange Rates n Shipping Costs depending on which Country ordering to. Yes we all excited and would give a Arm or a Leg for this device. This should be a device for the Everyone Worldwide and made to be as cheap as possible, so EVERYONE gets to Experience Retro Gaming Gun Games at A fair PRICE. Otherwise why do it unless to be a capililistic money hungry pig which dies not fit into retro gaming community!!!

DieKatzchen commented 6 years ago

But we're not talking about what his markup should be, we're talking about how expensive they are to make. That has nothing to do with being a "capitalistic pig"

wilhouse55 commented 6 years ago

While I apologize for speaking for others, and I purposely said "many" and not all, Charcole can price this at whatever he wants to and if you don't want to pay for it that's your business.

Using the words capitalistic (which you spelled wrong) money hungry pig on a person who has invested hundreds of hours and an untold amount of money on a product like this is unfair and unreasonable. I'm not going to speak for him on his reasons for doing this, but he has kept us involved for over a year and I for one am appreciative.

This is a highly specific specialty item, which takes skill and knowledge to complete. ml

charcole commented 6 years ago

Thanks for the interest everyone. I should say my intension all along was to make a product that was affordable for all. I wouldn't want to sell a product I didn't think was good value. A small run will mean it'll be more expensive but I won't be making big profits on it. I've definitely spent a reasonable amount of money developing the product but the small run is just a test, it's not intended to recoup that money.

I'm still planning on doing the small run, I just need to finish off the code (NTSC support still isn't done) and I need to price everything up. I'll let you know as soon as I have final prices and I'll see who's interested. Sorry it's taking ages, just struggling to get free time this year.

fd69 commented 6 years ago

That's fine I am sorry to for speaking that way, I just think amazing devices such as Charlie's should be shared with as many retro gamers worldwide. And priced to be available for any retro gamers budget.

Hi @charcole I think I've solved the other half of the problem with LCD Lightguns. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sindenlightgun/sinden-lightgun I'm also UK based and would be interested to have a conversation with you please :-) You can email me on contact sindenlightgun. With an @ symbol in the middle and a .com at the end.

iStruggle commented 6 years ago

This is amazing! I know I'm merely echoing what others have said here rather than contributing anything helpful, but seriously, when they are ready, take my money!!

I would be interested in building one myself, given explicit instructions. I am fairly skilled at soldering (I hard-chipped my PS2 when I was 15) and am able to read a schematic (just about I think!) but would need a lot of handholding with regards acquiring the correct components.

If this is an option now, what would it likely cost?

Otherwise, I'll be waiting patiently in what I expect will be a very long queue!

charcole commented 6 years ago

Thanks for the comment. Building one yourself is definitely possible. It's all surface mount but the components are fairly large (1206s and SOIC) and the pads are big for making hand soldering easier (it's how I make them). There is a lot to solder though, it basically takes me a whole day (8 hours) to build one. And there's a lot to go wrong so you might need some electronics knowledge to track down problems. If you're really keen and you think you are up to the challenge though I could get you a list of part numbers. I need to go through and fix the schematic as there's one component that's wrong. I'll even give you a spare board (I get them in batches of 10 so normally have some spares). Not sure what it'd cost you as I haven't added it all up in a while. Could work it out from the BOM though.

iStruggle commented 6 years ago

Thanks for the reply. While I'm fairly confident in my soldering skills (I have made simple projects using 1206 size SMD LEDs soldered by hand) I think my electronics knowledge would let me down. Again, while comfortable with a multimeter, I am useless with an oscilloscope! Troubleshooting anything more complex than MOSFETs may trip me up!

I have quite a few general components - resistors and caps etc but specific ICs I would have to order.

I'm always willing to have a go though - never learn otherwise...

Afactor22 commented 6 years ago

Hi @charcole First I just want to say you're my hero! Just awesome work! I have three questions. I recently saw the video of the original prototype and instantly bought the Pi and trinket pro not knowing how far ahead you are, but i still want to build the original prototype and I'm confused about a few things.

  1. In the trinket pro's code you have the pin modes serial, sync, white, photosensor, dimmer, led, button and trigger. I know serial is from the Pi, sync and white are from analogue board, dimmer is from the 2n7000 and led is out to a led, but i dont know where the outputs for photosensor and trigger go and I don't know where the input for button comes from. So where are those two outputs and one input (if they have any)?
  2. Where does the trimmer go on the analogue board?
  3. For ntsc on the original prototype how would I adjust the TIMING VISABLE LINES and is there anything else that needs to be changed in the code?

Please and thank you

nickle241 commented 6 years ago

I'm only just finding this today and this is a lot to try sort through. since i'm not sure on how this works, how would I go about trying to get one of these?

charcole commented 6 years ago

@Afactor22 Struggling to remember a bit as I wrote that code couple years ago now. My best answer to your questions are: 1) Photosensor and trigger were both for Wiimote only operation for NES. So those two outputs went to the NES controller port. Button looks to be a red herring and not used. 2) Trimmer on the analogue board is the variable resistor symbol labeled 50K on the right hand side 3) NTSC might work. If you get error when cursor is near the bottom of the screen reduce the constant 240 in wii.c (code was just hacked together for the prototype so no nice defines). Hope that helps.

@nickle241 Thanks. As @wilhouse55 says, it's not quite ready yet. Will let this thread know when it is.

@iStruggle If you're still keen send me a mail at cdcfoscam@yahoo.com. Sorry if I don't get back to you right away. It's an address I rarely check.

charcole commented 6 years ago

For everyone else you might have noticed that there's be a little flurry of activity this week. I've merged some big new improvements. The changes are...

When showing the menu, the image is slightly glitchy now but it's minor compared to the improvements. Will investigate what's going on with it at a later date.

NTSC/PAL timings need tweaking still but both are usable now and it just autodetects what it should be using. Only got an NTSC iPod Video so need to get some NTSC consoles or do some mods.

Afactor22 commented 6 years ago

@charcole thanks that helps a bunch! I can't wait to get my hands on the final product! I'll just have to stick with the original prototype for now. One more thing what are your thoughts on the snes super scope? Would it need just a tweek in the code? I know the super scope uses the same scanning system as the nes but instead of tracking the white levels the snes tracks the individual pixels. So would you basically just need to tell the super scope's receiver what pixel you're pointing at when the fire button is pushed? Thanks again for your help with the information. I really appreciate it.

charcole commented 6 years ago

@Afactor22 It should work fine on any system. It's just mimicking what a TV would do.

chackokhan commented 6 years ago

@charcole I have a question for you since your device would work on multiple system would it be possible to play a Sega Genesis game that specific for the Menacer with a Justifer instead? Other console systems had games with proprietary light guns to play them. Is possible that your device could work around them?

I apologize if you covered this already. I haven’t had a chance to read all of your updates.

@charcole Hi, I'm new here, but I gotta say that I love the idea and I can't wait to get my hands on one someday. I saw the video you made showcasing the original prototype, but I have some questions about the newer, presumably consumer-grade version you have in the works.

1) Does the final version still require the use of a Wiimote for tracking? If so, how would one attach it to the zapper? If not, how does the system handle tracking?

2) Does it still use a light plugged into the barrel or does the system simply fake the 'hit' signal that the zapper sends to the console?

3) Would this work with light gun systems that don't make the screen flash white such as the Super Scope?

4) I'm confused as do exactly this would be hooked up as part of an NES set-up. How would one hook this up?

5) If I wanted to get a hold of one, how would I go about doing that?

6) When do you think this could be ready as a consumer product?

Firstly sorry for the delay in replying to this thread lately. The good news is I've been hard at work trying to sort out the initial small run and you should be hearing about how to pre-order very soon, so get excited! :D

In other news I took apart a Sega Saturn Virtua Gun recently and found out they are very simple. Simple enough that you can play it using the Wiimote only method with a simple pass through cable. So will be othering those cables as an option too. Been enjoying playing some two player Virtua Cop this weekend :)

@NickTheNESHero Hey Nick. Thanks for the comment. The final version will still use the Wiimote for tracking. However there are two differnt ways it can be used:

The first method to is there'll be a cable that plugs straight into the controller port of the NES. It'll pass through the Wiimote trigger presses and simulate the hit signal so you can play just like you would a Wii game.

The second way is the univeral solution. This would be like in the original video where you attach the Wiimote to the Zapper (or any lightgun for the console you want to play) and place an LED into the barrel. I'm not planning on supplying a method of attachment but I have designed a 3D printed bracket that attaches a Wiimote to the Zapper and I will make the file for this available.

For either method it also needs a USB cable for power. Then the only other connection needed is to plug the compsite video output of the console into the device and then another cable into your TV.

@chackokhan Good question. So unfortunately my device won't make light guns from one system work on another (or incompatible lightguns on the same system). The universal solution needs the correct original hardware to function (we mimic the TV instead of the gun in this case). However I plan to make cables per machine so you can play it like a Wii game, therefore it's possible I could make Menacer and Justifer cable or a Menacer/Justifer switchable cable. (Nb. I don't know but I suspect Menacer and Justifer have incompatable pinouts. The Justifers were strange as they could be daisy chained if I remember correctly. Unforuntately information on the internet seems thin on the ground so I can probably only find out by taking one apart)

Good stuff! Hey will this work for the Time Crisis games on the various Playstation platforms? How would you suggest it be hooked up? That's what I've been waiting for.

hotd34me commented 6 years ago

Something like that for ps1 should work if you buy one of those USB to ps1 connectors and assuming the box he sells can get that kind of hardware support via a simple firmware update of the LCDZapper off github if it isn't supported from day 1 already. Since he said it comes with a composite connector, that means it has the same setup as a guncon, so I think the LCDZapper would work quite nice.

DreXinn commented 6 years ago

Does it matter if the Sega saturn virtue gun is the PAL version the blue one?

charcole commented 6 years ago

@wilhouse55 @hotd34me The universal method (wiimote attached to gun and led in barrel) is the only way this will work for Playstation platforms at the moment. For Wiimote only operation I'm planning an external module as there's some additional circuitry that'll be needed so might not be available straight away.

@DreXinn The version of the Virtua Gun shouldn't matter. My testing has been done with the PAL Blue ones.

Really excited to see this project I love lightgun games.

Have you tried contacting one of the retro hardware makers (retrobit, hyperkin, 8bitdo... etc) to see if they would have interest in the product? They might be more familiar with the needed certifications and be able to help you bring out a product that can sell to the mass retro community.

charcole commented 6 years ago

@jm33a Glad to hear you're excited :) I'm actually close to sorting out a small run on my own as a test. Will have news on the pre-order process very soon. Just finishing off the website etc. Regulatory issues means there's some caveats about where I can sell them initially but I'll explain that when I announce it.

In the meantime I have other updates:

The Playstation fans (@wilhouse55 @hotd34me) will be pleased to hear that I have now built a cable for Wiimote only operation on Playstation 1 and 2! Got GunCon 1 (Cinch) and Konami gun (IRQ10) support working. Tested on Area 51 (PSX), Time Crisis (PSX) and Time Crisis 3 (PS2/Europe).

Also got Master System direct cable working (which should mean some Megadrive/Genesis games should work too). Tested on Operation Wolf, Shooting Gallery and the Marksman Shooting / Trap Shooting / Safari Hunt multicart.

And finally I've worked out how Dreamcast guns communicate so that shouldn't be too far behind now either.

I look forward to seeing if I can get one.

Great! I really hope I am able to get in on the preorder. Really interested in using it on the Saturn

that's fantastic cause time crisis on the PS is what I'm looking forward to.

you think TC3 will work US? Isn't that the guncon 2? wilhouse

Hey charcole, should we put together a Google doc of people interested in purchasing one of these? Would it help? I know I'm in for one for sure.

charcole commented 6 years ago

@wilhouse55 According to the list of GunCon comparable games on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GunCon#Games_supporting_the_Guncon) Time Crisis 3 has Europe in brackets after it. Time Crisis 2 looks to be compatible though. GunCon 2 could probably be supported in time but it's a bit more complicated as USB is reasonably complex.

@ton999 Thanks for the idea but I almost have a website that'll act like a store (except won't take payments). This should gather all the data I need and for the initial run I'll chase up payments manually once I have them ready to ship.
