graphbuilder module refactored to allow exclusions and folding

this was from 3 months ago and never got merged in bc i forgot to make the PR

I haven't looked at the code or tried running this in a few months so someone should double-check there isn't stuff elsewhere that needs updating (like in the pages that call on graphbuilder)
