Type of card and card reader Buy some cards & readers to test Get some advice from @amcewen

Readers, I'd generally choose between the SL030 (and get the connector cable too if you're connecting it to a Pi) or the PN532 (haven't sourced many of those yet, but have been looking at them of late)

Tag-wise, the MiFare 1k can be got cheaply (probably knock-off rather than genuine NXP chips) from ebay, or if you look at NTAG213/216 then ZipNFC is good. Let me know if you find any better sources.

I based our original ball park figure of 3000 at 40p a unit to give 3000 which did not include printing so we budgeted for about £1200 card budget. Need to revise that:

Based on Oomph who do custom printing of RFID NXP Mifare 1K (@amcewen recommended) plus @gkboulter recent print quotes this is more realistic to reach 94p per unit: (Glenn Ive inc VAT and delivery from your quotes in #25

Name Number £ Cost inc. VAT lead time Cost per Unit
RFID Card Printed 1000 648 15 days 0.648
RFID Card Printed 1500 972 15 days 0.648
Size 210 x 210 2xside print 1000 289.26 inc delivery 0.29
Size 210 x 210 2xside print 1000 433.89 inc delivery 0.29

They offered these types but would need testing with the PN532 if we go with that. NXP Mifare 1K (@amcewen recommended) NXP Mifare Ultralight NXP Mifare Ultralight C NXP NTAG 213 NXP Mifare 4K NXP Desfire - 2K and 4K EM4200 125 KHz TK4100 125 KHz

Hey just a headsup for @amcewen Ive just realised a weird arduino bluetooth shield that arrived in the DoES post 2 weeks ago was actually my so called PN532 order from AliExpress so this doesn't inspire confidence! Maybe just avoid shop no. 1184212

@cefn Pretty sure we are using these now so I think we are best going with the cheaper RFID tags with MileCastles stickers of our little roman character @gkboulter made. So lets just go with that and get 1000 to start with

cheapjack commented 7 years ago

Closing as we've chosen cheaper tags (with stickers) that will work with this reader
