add new job_status, crashed
move some logic from list comprehensions to recursive funs to check return types

Look good; nothing jumps out at me as problematic and the refactors seem like definite improvements.

Also -- I'm assuming tests and dialyzers pass. I won't have a current environment to test this until Wednesday, so I didn't actively test that.
