Currently there is a big variation in the way we present selected / total. I think there should be a component so that we always use the same look.
I would suggest to always have [ nbSelected / total ]
[ nbSelected / total ]
Or in order to win a little bit of space you could use Thin Space [ nbSelected / total ]

In spectra the number of selected is not displayed:
