-to close their path
-to "simplify" then or change themselves to bezier curves with smooth nodes

I think freehand drawing can remain just scribbles that do not need to be 
closed.  

I think your other issues will be covered by Issue 34 (full path editing) and
possibly Issue 68 (convert object to path)
