I got coreavc 1.5 working with this version of mplayer:
http://gentoo.osuosl.org/distfiles/mplayer-20070927.tar.bz2

Just follow the usual instructions. Worked for me, running Gentoo linux on a 
Intel P4.

It works on 1.5.0, but can be finicky about the registry.  1.7.0 is now 
supported,
and you should't have any problems with that.
