Just as a data point, I'm using coreavc (v1.5) with mythtv. Plays recrdings
from bbc
hd fine - so long as its the first recording I play. If I play a mpeg2 recording
first and then try to play a h.264 recording, mythfrontend will segfault.

This isn't so much an issue as a feature request. Coreavc 1.5 isn't supported
yet.
If you already bought 1.5 but core hasn't given you access to 1.3, just bt it.

version 1.7.0 is now supported, use that instead. I don't plan to do any work
supporting older versions (though 1.5.0 does work for most)
