I can confirm that ESP8266 NodeMCU v3 works like a charm.

[env:esp8266] framework = arduino platform = espressif8266 board = nodemcuv2 <------ Just use v2 board type board_build.mcu = esp8266 lib_deps = rweather/Crypto @ ^0.2.0 knolleary/PubSubClient@^2.8
