About the group

Chicago Covid19 Mutual Aid is a group of volunteers supporting local community groups organising mutual aid throughout the Covid-19 outbreak in the greater Chicagoland region.

Mutual aid projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for one another and changing political conditions, not just through symbolic acts or putting pressure on their representatives in government, but by actually building new social relations that are more survivable. Most mutual aid projects are volunteer-based, with people jumping in to participate because they want to change what is going on right now, not wait to convince corporations or politicians to do the right thing.

This breakout group, also is here to serve the technical and data needs of the network and neighborhood groups. All the work we do is driven by the needs and requests of the neighborhood point people.

Current projects

Transforming this resources directory spreadsheet into a website.
Creating and compiling some good intro to Slack guides and resources. Mutual aid efforts in Chicago are leveraging Slack to bring neighbors together, and for many it’s their first time using Slack.

Who we're looking for

Here’s a list of the kinds of things that we do:

Website set up, maintenance, and domain management
Digital security, secure communications
Selecting and choosing tech vendors
Slack administration & onboarding
Setting up spreadsheets and databases
Automations and integrations like getting new form submissions to notify a Slack channel, etc.
Data entry, data analysis
Prototyping more advanced solutions
Keeping an eye out for shared problems across neighborhoods/areas and existing reusable solutions

hey @lorenanicole! Update on this project - the mutual aid groups I have listed have already connected to each other and we are in contact with them. Pop in to our slack - things are moving there! #chi_hack_night_tech_support

I am doing very similar work atm regarding putting resources up onto a website so I’d be interested to hear more about those plans! Maybe we can collaborate.

I haven’t looked at the code for this project yet but it but it also looked like a promising proof of concept:
