I know that Ryzen processors love running with faster RAM. Upgrading your RAM gives you more CPU speed. That said, there is only so much correlation there.

You could shave $100 off of your build if you downgrade to something DDR4-3600 and put that money into your GPU where you'll see more performance for the money.

At 4266Mhz, is this RAM a good candidate for HBMC do you think? Not that you'd have a lot of use for HBMC with the 5700, which has enough VRAM anyhow.

I've never tinkered with HBMC. I've got a pretty GSync monitor that kept me locked into NVIDIA.

Oh also the Ryzen 3900x can't exploit 4266MHz RAM anyhow, it caps out at 3200MHz (citation 1, citation 2).

And omgosh I just got an OLED (LG C9) with VRR + GSync support, but unfortunately not Freesync. Fingers crossed that AMD's new line of GPUs support HDMI 2.1, otherwise I'll have to switch teams.

I do more pretty adventure games than fast twitch games, so max FPS isn't my main concern. Right now I have to target slightly conservative quality settings to make sure I hit that 60fps floor for vsync, even if most of the time the GPU is well under 100%. With VRR, it seems like I could push those settings up further because even if it exceeds the GPU's capability, at least I wouldn't drop frames.

Is that analysis sound @michaelabon, do you think? Is VRR as much of a game-changer as it seems?

VRR makes a huge difference, for me. The biggest upgrade I've had in gaming has been high frame rates, even for games like Cities: Skylines or for Euro Truck Simulator 2. The games just look crisper. I definitely got a GSync monitor for my FPS games, but I appreciate it everywhere.

I enjoy turning off vsync when I fire up a new game to get the extra frames. I don't have to worry about dropping frames or about screen tearing.
