There may be options available to us already. If we use an existing system, we
need
permission from the owner of that code to distribute it. Please have them email
ttabbal a written notice. They will be given access to Subversion to add
their application.
Open source is preferred but not required for this item. The source license may
also
be different for this item if it's contributed from a third party.

At this time I am unable to find any open-source IM clients for the android
platform.
This leaves us with two options, build our own or use a closed source app.
A simple list of closed-source apps we could use, Meebo, Ebuddy, Nimbuzz. There
may
be more but these are the popular ones that I know of. There really doesn't
seem to
be too many IM clients and even fewer multi-protocol IM clients.
Do we want to email the developers of these closed source IM apps and if so
which
should we start with?

I highly suggest that a separate, fully open-source IM application supporting
all
major IM and Social Networks is developed from scratch rather than becoming
dependent
on third party solutions. Many third party solutions do not go too deeply
integrated
into the core of the Android OS as they assume the basic GoogleTalk IM works
there.
Developing your own multi-IM application would allow you to develop with very
deep
integration than other apps. Also, this way you become free of future commercial
actions from these companies. What if Meebo starts showing ads in an otherwise
Open
Source-spirited alternative of Google Apps? Protect yourself early so you can
ensure
viability in the long-run.

Hi,
if i'm not mistake http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/index.jsp give an
xmpp java
implementation and open source client. Problably the porting could be more
easily
than porting libpurble and write some JNI binding for that using NDK

I've been searching for a free IM-Client for Android for a while. That's what I
found:
Jabiru - a Jabber client - http://jabiru.mzet.net/
Looks like a one-man project and doesn't specify a license. Maybe we should
contact him.
SIP Communicator - promising free (gpl) java multi-protocol client -
http://www.sip-communicator.org
From the FAQ: "The effort to port SIP Communicator to "Android" has started but
is
not yet finished."
sipdroid - free (gpl) SIP client - http://sipdroid.org/

Another option would be Yaaic (yet another android irc client). You could use
BitlBee to connect to other IM Networks.
