\slash command is not interpreted #211

The command \slash for a forward slash doesn't do anything (either in plain text or in mathmode).

Minimal failing example:

\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}

\slash

$ \slash$

\end{document}

Just writing a forward slash / does work as intended, but many people appear to use \slash which is supported in the pdf output.
