Getting the exact same issue (Debian Stretch, MATE, also Radeon). Right now, when this happens, I just hit CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to the login screen (lock) and unlock it. I do wonder what's causing this though... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
radeon has a history of opengl bugs, although i think i saw another thread with nvidia having eventual frozen windows
Same with Nvidia GTX..
Also happens with the open source intel glx drivers. Using Openbox, with LXDM, on Void Linux.
I've been using compton for a few weeks without issue until today.
Today, it made my computer unusable, with window content sometimes not refreshing, either frozen like a screenshot or totally grey. I don't know how to explain this any better.
My setup:
Debian Jessie / Mate desktop compton (0.1~beta2-1) ATI video card (I doubt this is relevant):
My config file (untouched since the first day):
I made up this config file from random stuff found on the internet. Maybe it is wrong. I just want to fix video tearing. No fancy window effects.
Commenting
glx-no-rebind-pixmap
seems to fix the issue and makes the computer usable, although pretty slow, and compton eats a lot of CPU (like 50% just when changing window selection, I never specifically monitored its CPU usage, but I believe this is more than it used to be). However, when it is commented, the tearing reappears...I checked the logs for recently upgraded packages and didn't see anything that could be related.
.xsession-erros.log might give a clue:
Anything I could investigate?
