EC2 instance Maintenance #153

Closed rsanc77 closed 11 years ago

I need to update the kernel on the instance that serendipomatic is running. Since this is a kernel update I need to restart the instance in order for the changes to take effect. Can Someone let me know which would be the most favorable time for this to happen. Thanks.

@mfrazer any thoughts on this? My sense is that we don't have enough traffic for this to be much of an issue, as long as it doesn't conflict with when we are trying to push out an update to the site (which we hope to do fairly soon, but not sure when).

@rsanc77 do you know if this will make much difference to the site? In particular, does it matter if the virtual machine you created does not get updated?

My impression is the same as yours, Rebecca, I don't think we have enough traffic to make a huge impact. I will say that the analytics data implies Monday or Tuesday would be best - lowest traffic days. And, as long as we know when, we can plan our release around it.

This update will not change anything site related. But it matters to the health of the virtual machine. If the "health" of the virtual machine degrades for any reason chances are that it will fail and it will make it harder to recover. when will that happen I don't know but it has happened to me before.

Monday or Tuesday works for me I will very likely be running the update sometime close to midnight let me know if Monday works for you if not I'll do it Tuesday night.

Either night sounds fine to me. Thanks for taking care of the updates.
