Why Is It Needed
Knowing at a glance whether a machine is online or not can help an administrator while they are working inside the CCM console determine whether to include a machine as part of a Deployment Plan, and also will help facilitate future enhancements that may rely on the ability to determine whether a device is currently online. This heartbeat should be a single ICMP ping to all associated IP addresses with the device, with some sort of UI indicator of the status available in the Web UI.
